Neighbourhoods of Cabo de Gata

Cabo de Gata consists of a number of neighbourhoods and areas:

  • Cabo de Gata: The coastal region was once a fishing village. Today, it's home to the picturesque Playa del Charco, a long stretch of coastline with a number of excellent bars and restaurants. There are several picturesque parks, like Parque de La Bruja and Parque Azul, as well as the fortification ruins of Torreon de San Miguel de Cabo de Gata. The residential areas are pretty little streets with whitewashed homes.
  • La Almadraba de Monteleva: East of town, this sleepy village is technically part of Cabo de Gata. It's home to the still-operational salt works and the pretty remote church of Iglesia Cabo De Gata.
  • La Fabriquila: Another sleepy village east of the salt lagoons. The beautiful Playa de La Fabriquilla beach is here. You'll also find the observation deck of Cerro de San Miguel and the Bunker Guerra Civil.
  • Pujaire: A tiny neighbourhood 4km from Cabe de Gata centre and home to some nice eco-cottages and several restaurants.

What to see and do in Cabo de Gata

The unspoilt beaches of Cabo de Gata stretch for miles, offering some of the most sumptuous sunsets in southern Spain. By far the biggest attraction here is the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata-Níjar. The parkland surrounds the town and offers plenty of hiking, horse riding, swimming and sports activities. Just east, you'll find the fabulous Faro de Cabo de Gata, a lighthouse that juts out on jagged volcanic rocks. You can reach the 18th-century watchtower of Torre Vigía Vela Blanca from here for views over the coast. You'll also find plenty of historic attractions, including the ruined Gold Mines of Rodalquilar. You can learn about this mining history at the small La Casa de los Volcanes museum.


What to eat in Cabo de Gata

You'll find ample restaurants and bars in the area's coastal villages and along the Cabo de Gata beachfront. Many places shut in winter, however, so plan accordingly. The cuisine is largely regional Andalusian fare, with ajoblanco (cold bread soup with almonds) and bocas de la Isla (cooked crab meat) among the area's specialities.


Typical events and festivals in Cabo de Gata

Cabo de Gata celebrates a number of cultural and religious festivities, and you can experience more fiestas in the area as well. The main festival in town is the Feria de Almería, a celebration with fireworks and games. East in La Isleta del Moro, you'll find the Virgen del Carmen celebrated in mid-July.


How to move around in Cabo de Gata

There are several bus services linking Cabe de Gata and other areas in Almería and the natural park. However, rental cars are far more convenient and recommended.
